Town of Balchik
Balchik its one of the places which keeps very bright and vivid memories in my heart from the times spend with my family and relatives and especially my lovely aunt and my cuisines. When I have visited this place for a first time I felt like in a fairy tale really. It is one of the most fantastic places on earth. My aunt its very cheerful and calm person and always knows how to entertain people. She likes allot nature and best places to visit and enjoy the sun.
During our visit to Varna with Keith and my family we have decided to visit also the small town of Balchik.I have visited the town so many times as my uncle its born in there. We have staid a day enjoying the local restaurants eating fish with wine and after visited the palace of Balchik. Balchik its situated in North - East part of Bulgaria on the Balck sea and it is very famouse place for tourism in the country. It is 42 km away from Varna and you can get bus trough there. The town is named after the medieval ruler Balik, brother of Dobrotitza, after who is named the city of Dobrich. The palace has been always closed inside for visitors but this could be changed now. The garden its a vast collection of different trees and also cactus's well preserved during the winter. Founded as a Thracian settlement, it was later colonized by the Ionian ancient Greeks with the name Krounoi (renamed as Dionysopolis, after the discovery of a statue of Dionysus in the sea). Later became a Greek-Byzantine and Bulgarian fortress. Under the Ottoman Empire, the town came to be known with its present name, which perhaps derived from a Gagauz word meaning "small town". Another opinion is that its actual name derived from Balik's name. After the Second Balkan War, in 1913, the town, styled Balcic, became part of the Kingdom of Romania. It was regained by Bulgaria during World War I (1916–1919), but Romania restored its authority when hostilities in the region ceased. In 1940, just before the outbreak of World War II in the region, Balchik was ceded by Romania to Bulgaria by the terms of the Craiova Treaty. During Romania's administration, the Balchik Palace was the favourite summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania and her immediate family. The town is the site of Marie's Oriental villa, the place where her heart was kept, in accordance with her last wishes, until 1940 (when the Treaty of Craiovaawarded the region back to Bulgaria). It was then moved to Bran Castle, in central Romania. Today, the Balchik Palace and the adjacent Balchik Botanical Garden are the town's most popular landmarks. Currently, three 18-hole golf courses are being developed around town, two designed by Gary Player and one by Ian Woosnam.Francis Ford Coppola has visited the town for 11 days for filming a movie.During 2007 building process has been discovered the statue and other elements from the Temple of Cybele Elinic Greece goddess. |
The construction of the garden is due to the dedication of Bulgarian scientists of world renown, including academic Daki Yordanov. Today the Botanical garden boasts the second largest in Europe (after Monaco) collection of cacti. Using the favorable natural conditions, the Bulgarian biologists acclimatized many alien plants. Exchanges with more than 450 botanical gardens in the world has led to considerable diversity of species - more than 3,000 species of plants, 120 species of bamboo, alpine species, 200 species of cacti, old trees. Botanical Garden covers an area of 100 sq.m.
The total number of plant species grown in the garden is greater than 2500. They belong to 85 families and 800 genera - an incredible variety of types and forms. Extremely interesting is the collection of palms, some more than 50 years old. You should not pass the exotic plants such as the Candy tree (Hovenia dulcis) and the Pencil tree (Cupressus sempervirens), as well as the Metasequoia - species of which the researchers were convinced that were disappeared from the face of the earth. But during a scientific expedition in China Academician Nikolay Stoyanov found a live Candy tree and brought it to Bulgaria. The collection of plants brought from around the world, covers an area of 16 acres. The Botanical garden in Balchik is also the only botanical garden in the country that builds and develops special lanes for people with mobility and visual disabilities. There the blind people can learn about plants through special signs written in Braille and gain complete impression of the garden. Among the most beautiful plants in the garden are the water lilies, the magnolias, and the magnificently arranged collection of annual plants at the entrance. Botanical Garden is situated in the Balchik palace, making walking in a unique experience – tourists can see in one place astonishing natural diversity and a bit of the Balkan history – the beautiful Balchik Palace. In the Gethsemane Garden of the palace is arranged collection of exotic trees. The view varies according to season, visitors can observe rare species like Aucuba japonika, Diospyros lotus, Albizzia julibrizzu, and figs, pomegranate, persimmon and others. From Gethsemane man can easily reach the Rosary, which is surrounded by Ginkgo trees. In the rose garden 34 hybrid species of roses grow. If possible, visit both the Botanical Garden and the Palace in Balchik. Both sites provide a unique experience and are located close to the beach of Balchik, where you can relax under the summer sun. Tags In 1921 Queen Maria Alexandrina Victoria de Edinburgh decided to visit Balchik, intrigued by stories of her friends: Prince Szatmár and his wife Ortansa. They called the city "a green oasis". Captivated by the natural charm of the place, of the white cliffs and the serene sea, she decided to build a summer residence here, and in 1937 the palace was ready. They called it "The Quiet Nest". Fortunately, Queen Maria had a strict requirement for the builders: she demanded from them not to disturb the natural beauty and splendor of the area. Balchik Undoubtedly one of the pearls of Bulgaria’s North coast, Balchik should definitely be one of your destinations, in case you are planning to visit the Black Sea this summer. The picturesque town of Balchik is located 23 miles from Dobrich and 29 miles from the biggest coastal town in Bulgaria- Varna. |
Fortress Kaliakra
Cape Kaliakra is situated at the end of a long and narrow peninsula on the Black Sea Coast. The coast has very steep vertical cliffs with a height of about 70 m. The inaccessibility of the cliffs is the reason, that fortifications were built on the cape in ancient times. The earliest finds were dated to the 4th century BC, when the cape was inhabited by the Thracian tribe "Tirizis", which gave the first name of the fortress - Tirizis. It is situated near the village of Balgarevo.Very near to city Varna
During the late antiquity the settlement was called Acre Castellum and was one of the fifteen towns included in the Roman Province of Scythia. |
